Our Technology

We are experts in the synthesis of perovskites growing them monolithically on-chip and bonding them to chips. Perovskites are a group of metal halide crystals which have interesting properties in x-ray detectors.

They exhibit high carrier mobility and long carrier diffusion lengths, allowing effective charge collection and resulting in high sensitivity to X-rays

With a high atomic number metal at its core, Perovskite has excellent X-ray attenuation capability, even in thin layers

Single-crystal perovskites typically have fewer defects and high bulk resistivity, which minimises background noise (dark current) and enhances detector performance at low radiation doses

Perovskites can be synthesized at low temperatures using scalable solution-processing methods, enabling cost-effective, large-area detector fabrication

Impact

Image resolution and the ability to easily differentiate different structures/tissues/materials are the most important outputs from CT scans and X-ray images. Superior photon-counting capability is the enabler of enhanced imaging. Perovskite, with a heavy metal atom at its heart, has higher sensitivity due to its ability to attenuate photons better than existing EID detector technologies.

About ClaritySensors

We are a recent spinout from the University of Cambridge and are located in the city. Our journey began with over £1m in university awarded grants and in April 2025 we were the recipients of a €2.5m European Innovation Council Transition Grant to bring our photon-counting x-ray detector to market validation status. Our mission is to transform x-ray imaging by developing photon-counting detectors using state-of-the-art perovskite semiconductors that produce high-quality CT scan and X-ray images at a fraction of the current X-ray dose.

By turning cutting-edge research into impactful technology, our vision is to enable a world with greater access to life-saving preventative screening, earlier disease detection, better security screening and more efficient industry.
